    Celebrate Canada’s 150th birthday!

The Canada 150 Voyageur Rendezvous Canoe Race follows the North Saskatchewan River from Rocky Mountain House, Alberta to The Pas, Manitoba, retracing 1600 kilometers on a historic trade route. The canoe race recognizes the very essence and spirit of our great country – the wilderness, our combined history; a meeting and uniting of people of diverse backgrounds. For both participants and onlookers, this event will make Canada’s 150 memorable.

The 2017 event is a celebration and remembrance of our combined First Nations and Fur Traders history on Canada’s river highways, bringing together modern paddlers from all over Canada to re-enact the historic trips, as well as the 1967 canoers who paddled their way into history on Canada’s 100th birthday. The racers will be making stops in 20 communities and parks along the way.

On Sunday July 2, 2017 a flotilla of 20 teams, along with their support groups will be coming through Drayton Valley / Brazeau County as one of the first stops on their trip. Drayton Valley Paddling Club, in collaboration with Town of Drayton Valley, County of Brazeau, and Eagle Point – Blue Rapids Parks Council, is hosting a celebration in recognition of, and in addition to Canada 150 events.

The racers will arrive at Willey West Campground about 2:00 pm and everyone is invited to be there to cheer them on, and welcome them to our community. After a brief rest, the paddlers will be back on the water in their 25 foot North Canoes to demonstrate their skill with sprint races, competing for cash prizes. Awards, music, and a community supper at 5:30 pm at the Drayton Valley Mackenzie Conference Center will follow. Supper tickets will be available at Willey West Campground Office, and the Town Office, until June 19 ($12 each).

The Canoe Race will resume the next morning, Monday, July 3, from Willey West Campground, as the race officials fire the starting pistol at 9:00 am

Volunteers are needed! For more information and to volunteer call Elaine at 780-514-4509 or email
